<h2>
The New Idea Crochet Book No. 1 - Delightful Doileys</h2>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2zDsmfWyfKzGaKH-GEk4a1faXmOxmy7XdWo2lLTX1MKLpP9APduQsUHTQztWWZICJSHNItJrdJ9mNavM9kS7mh3wlDMe4xpwI-5H120HTpoBoA_Fw5aTVRlRbRuve6k6CaRuDk7UcH8I/s640/blogger-image--72989790.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2zDsmfWyfKzGaKH-GEk4a1faXmOxmy7XdWo2lLTX1MKLpP9APduQsUHTQztWWZICJSHNItJrdJ9mNavM9kS7mh3wlDMe4xpwI-5H120HTpoBoA_Fw5aTVRlRbRuve6k6CaRuDk7UcH8I/s640/blogger-image--72989790.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
This is my first crochet book. The one that started it all. It came from my Nanna, in a box with dozens of steel crochet hooks, spools of thread and at least 50 other patterns. Actually, truth be told I have three and a half copies of this book all in various states of disrepair. Nanna never threw anything out that she thought might be useful. Hence the box of goodies, some of which belonged to my Great-grandmother.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
I loved the patterns in Delightful Doileys, and decided someone in the family needed to make use of the hooks, thread and patterns. That Easter, mum taught me the basics of crochet while we were on holiday. After my first doiley I was hooked. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
This is my first doiley, it didn't turn out too well. I misread the pattern and didn't put in all the trebles that define the pattern. Old patterns often assume you already know what you're doing, so it's easy for a beginner to mess things up. </div>

<div>
Mary Card's New Book of Filet Crochet Designs made me fall in love with crochet all over again. Mum found this book at a trash and treasure stall. Knowing how much I like crochet and how hard it is to find vintage patterns she bought it for 20c. Inside the book is chock full of beautiful lace patterns. I was entranced and I immediately made the Sparrow and Narcissus Placemat.</div>

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Since then Mary Card has become one of my favourite crochet designers. Usually filet is pretty blocky and clunky, but somehow Mary Card made the filet patterns light and elegant. Much of her work incorporates birds and flowers, and it is finished beautifully with an intricate boarder. </div>

Creepy Cute Crochet</h2>

<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
When I went back to university to study animation, I decided to put my hook down and take the whole studying thing seriously. On my way home one afternoon, I stopped by my favourite bookstore and found this tiny book on the shelves.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
It was full of very cute amigurumi. Everything from amazons to zombies, with easy to follow instructions on how to make them. I'd always wanted to try amigurumi, but just hadn't found the right pattern. Here it was, I couldn't leave to book on the shelf.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
That night I made my first amigurumi, a cyber-zombie.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-LH3ds4tKc5BKt21wBcrWvsswNCV8xsb_nX8h998D9XcNAmws-yH9aJvJHid3FXL1_3VQxb-p0-0rCiWrn-3yk9WSWw_nMF6kpjYBd_xBw4kdAbNnVx1aIZ0he52swOK-GssmuvNCZGo/s1600/IMG_1473.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-LH3ds4tKc5BKt21wBcrWvsswNCV8xsb_nX8h998D9XcNAmws-yH9aJvJHid3FXL1_3VQxb-p0-0rCiWrn-3yk9WSWw_nMF6kpjYBd_xBw4kdAbNnVx1aIZ0he52swOK-GssmuvNCZGo/s320/IMG_1473.jpg" width="279" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
My sister requested a cthulu, so I made him too.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
By the end of the year I had made most of the creepy cute family and had started adapting the patterns to make new characters.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQT1Midxb1yYPEj6gZHQn1Goz7CVzoOG-bt4qp_S9q23pBLCMgO6w9f_upf56yec_UgXdHUkXM0yki12iysi2vzA2lQ26qRUaAPjW1PdTEiiSlKOa3R4qBdG2gQtmwtmaCVd0LOyugSpQ/s1600/creepy_cute_adaptation.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="107" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQT1Midxb1yYPEj6gZHQn1Goz7CVzoOG-bt4qp_S9q23pBLCMgO6w9f_upf56yec_UgXdHUkXM0yki12iysi2vzA2lQ26qRUaAPjW1PdTEiiSlKOa3R4qBdG2gQtmwtmaCVd0LOyugSpQ/s320/creepy_cute_adaptation.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Not only did this book teach me to crochet amigurumi, but it also encouraged me to incorporate crochet into my animation. For my final film I made a stop motion film with crochet characters.</div>

Whilst I love the technical side of making lace, I don't wear any of it. It's all too frilly and not really my style. That's where this book comes in.<br />
<br />
Everything in here is made with lace weight mercerised cotton (60-80). The designs are simple and elegant. 8?? different shaped motifs come together to produce a range of wearable art. Everything from brooches to scarves. Best of all, most projects are small and don't need much yarn. Perfect for using up left over cotton.<br />
<br />
This brooch uses vintage ecru cotton.</div>

I saw a pattern on <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/a-girls-best-friend-diamond-pattern-hat" target="_blank">Ravelry</a> for a lovely diamond patterned hat. Perfect for using up some hand spun yarn I had kicking around in my yarn stash. <br />
<br />
Sadly I ran out of yarn half way through. I've had the yarn so long I couldn't remember what the ply was, so the hat is also too small. Hat fail.<br />

I was showing the failure of a hat to my sister, when she pointed out that the demi-hat was about the same size as a small teapot. Just like the one I've been putting a big tea-cozy on to keep warm, whenever she visits. </div>

Here she is:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPyaODvXYTBbf7aBy2y1mpjJjL7p_7wuOWVs_lWnmpPcLqZ2839Lx0brhWWqi2mKkEMq1j22vVcNP6quAmMGpGfFTZbytIdaBUZTOc09Jro9TJtLaxROtZWiGZWjsaFhCH6IBs8F5dbxc/s1600/IMG_1630.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPyaODvXYTBbf7aBy2y1mpjJjL7p_7wuOWVs_lWnmpPcLqZ2839Lx0brhWWqi2mKkEMq1j22vVcNP6quAmMGpGfFTZbytIdaBUZTOc09Jro9TJtLaxROtZWiGZWjsaFhCH6IBs8F5dbxc/s400/IMG_1630.jpg" width="296" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>Octavia the Octopus.</b></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgd5nnqz6SL7XM365rPrlyEG0LzbZnKSbIn7txRfaZEdKh4wd-gqe3lYb6PE8BYezN0W1w9TLWwrQiwAj0cqBn6vEJmVlhlYzxxutbnESLNKls4lecsUxVjevT3omdVreuboTstw5E8sjQ/s1600/IMG_1635.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgd5nnqz6SL7XM365rPrlyEG0LzbZnKSbIn7txRfaZEdKh4wd-gqe3lYb6PE8BYezN0W1w9TLWwrQiwAj0cqBn6vEJmVlhlYzxxutbnESLNKls4lecsUxVjevT3omdVreuboTstw5E8sjQ/s400/IMG_1635.jpg" width="384" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Made using 8ply yarn and a 3mm crochet hook. The eyes were attached using a felting needle.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHTSZGJPU46T7_UNTc5vV9fUx_P9PqNpXve79LZRymC4H5ST9HfYHr8UyzJZHMHpvmpWl-0pMrMkBwP7cEpho5y9XmFfes7FV74RF1zfx3r5nJhqa7SiGaHi_3chyphenhyphen05y_soTzNS5W3nhY/s1600/IMG_1632.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHTSZGJPU46T7_UNTc5vV9fUx_P9PqNpXve79LZRymC4H5ST9HfYHr8UyzJZHMHpvmpWl-0pMrMkBwP7cEpho5y9XmFfes7FV74RF1zfx3r5nJhqa7SiGaHi_3chyphenhyphen05y_soTzNS5W3nhY/s400/IMG_1632.jpg" width="340" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Octavia is also worked all in one piece. The legs are crocheted together while making the body. Much neater than sewing the parts together at the end.</div>

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
It turns out that if you add arms legs and an oversized head to an Ultimate Weapon, you get a rather friendly robot.<br />
<br />
This guy is made out of 8ply cozy wool with a wire armature to hold the pose. There are also eight washers in the feet to balance out the giant head.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2258738402180864896.post-65041607127281808882016-10-14T13:10:00.003+11:002016-10-25T12:32:50.203+11:00Unexpectedly EvilI accidentally made a Death Star.<br />

I was working on another project when one of the parts started looking familiar. With the quick addition of a button I had my very own crochet Death Star. <br />

I hope to finish the new project soon. Probably because it was the first one I encountered on late night television. I've since watched some of the earlier series, and Voyager is still the one I like the most.<br />
<br />
So what better to boldly crochet than the female crew from Voyager. Starting with the tough but fair Captain Janeway.<br />

This is Trinity from the first movie, before she got relegated to girlfriend in the sequels. I've taken a bit of a liberty with the colours, in the movie her outfit is all black and shiny. I've skipped the shiny (because it's impossible to do with yarn) and added some greys for interest.</div>

<br />
1: It is time I made my own pattern and<br />
<br />
2: I really don't make many female amigurumi.<br />
<br />
Here is the solution. My first ever designed from scratch amigurumi:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyKxdugv2Iyby7YXvSX_n9dOyv35oxfBpI979jSgJF1w1vPp2vH9g9Fe-dQ7SIlMORm8iqSjclxZSCzfvUbPP5G7z3GCMFWG8_npaiwMiWNBWjj3EZvGc5kZ27K0QDJ6huejXgbeOtZ68/s1600/Furiosa_web.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyKxdugv2Iyby7YXvSX_n9dOyv35oxfBpI979jSgJF1w1vPp2vH9g9Fe-dQ7SIlMORm8iqSjclxZSCzfvUbPP5G7z3GCMFWG8_npaiwMiWNBWjj3EZvGc5kZ27K0QDJ6huejXgbeOtZ68/s320/Furiosa_web.jpg" width="283" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
The most kick ass character I could think of: Imperator Furiosa. For those of you who haven't seen Mad Max, stop reading and go see it now. (No seriously, go now. It's got explosions AND a story. You don't get that with your average action movie.)<br />
<br />
For now I'm off to crochet another character. Who to choose next?<br />
<br />Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2258738402180864896.post-7554485182927151252016-04-22T16:09:00.001+10:002016-04-22T16:09:51.615+10:00SlimyOne of my favourite characters on Sesame Street was Slimy the worm. As I have plenty of time on my hands, today I decided to make him. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSc6Camzk1W8-tPCEb9itWnG4yJHUD7Oyke1pHHVn2G29lY1Z2QM5h1_CnNTKCcbeU4wYh3RImeSaQOFCslvAWF2oJDk_VrDTvyBHutk4HavInEa-3tsGk5oVR8nWn16YbpbxBHWg7GGs/s1600/ECG_Slimy.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="223" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSc6Camzk1W8-tPCEb9itWnG4yJHUD7Oyke1pHHVn2G29lY1Z2QM5h1_CnNTKCcbeU4wYh3RImeSaQOFCslvAWF2oJDk_VrDTvyBHutk4HavInEa-3tsGk5oVR8nWn16YbpbxBHWg7GGs/s320/ECG_Slimy.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Slimy is made from yellow and orange 8ply yarn, crocheted with a 3mm hook. He is filled with polyester stuffing and has a wire armature so that I can pose his body and mouth. The inside of the mouth is maroon and pink felt. They eyes are two 4mm black glass beads. <br />

Despite entering three categories the best I could manage was a Third place. I've been told that you learn more from failure than success, so here are the things I have learned this year:</span><br />
<br />
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><b>I need to improve my blocking.</b></span></li>
</ul>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The blue one with white is mine. As you can see it's hanging unevenly. </span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi58TraA5c0mc-_3CiKm6hlDSZCTTUUco7VjdCN89H2855Qq-vTteZIJGoHNdNcH8IaYR7UkVL8UFtcRsfUe5iUZ2l9-FMxj2XuBOrudGQjbTxH7X-s97TwQTR_21Nbl2UqulPYjm0W2WY/s1600/Baby_rug_01.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi58TraA5c0mc-_3CiKm6hlDSZCTTUUco7VjdCN89H2855Qq-vTteZIJGoHNdNcH8IaYR7UkVL8UFtcRsfUe5iUZ2l9-FMxj2XuBOrudGQjbTxH7X-s97TwQTR_21Nbl2UqulPYjm0W2WY/s1600/Baby_rug_01.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">With proper blocking it should look like this orange one. Nice and even.</span></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNuUKOJvyU6uVvx4DAz9CbemFINa3-o3HhswVUoQ5Ow7fqsAAkjioQRp2-5S4jN-X_tz_HxgMhdNSp2OKKwwFBAPeWRpZf-yiYI5ELMP_yy8cjJs-wWfSDZSR119M5XLXptQq9-MOJ788/s1600/Baby_rug_02.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="198" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNuUKOJvyU6uVvx4DAz9CbemFINa3-o3HhswVUoQ5Ow7fqsAAkjioQRp2-5S4jN-X_tz_HxgMhdNSp2OKKwwFBAPeWRpZf-yiYI5ELMP_yy8cjJs-wWfSDZSR119M5XLXptQq9-MOJ788/s320/Baby_rug_02.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
</div>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><b>I also need to remember to attach the yarn tags.</b></span></li>
</ul>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This was a sponsored category, which means I had to use a specific yarn and pattern. I forgot to attach the tags to prove I used the right yarn. Marks were deducted.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">(I also had marks deducted for having ends visible. I'm choosing to ignore this because I had to sew in about 400 more ends than any other competitor. Those white segments aren't easy.) </span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><b>Quantity beats quality for amigurumi</b></span></li>
</ul>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I know judges decisions are final, but I'm not sure about the judging for the Amigurumi category. It seems like the more work has gone into a project, the less they care about consistency. </span></div>
</div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Too be fair, the winner was pretty cool. Such neat stitching.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMFp6lUzi8N91iqXcIZW_DiMj5YkCpOeGhqRO4DQjATqp8WWpoHpyfPYxYXzNzYdJiuscko_qR1Dnx4uNi4LEvFj7vj1arNBCA4dfGWOlKIrLOyBqxW7njdc1cZXPdBehyEL37z5UsGL4/s1600/ami_01.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMFp6lUzi8N91iqXcIZW_DiMj5YkCpOeGhqRO4DQjATqp8WWpoHpyfPYxYXzNzYdJiuscko_qR1Dnx4uNi4LEvFj7vj1arNBCA4dfGWOlKIrLOyBqxW7njdc1cZXPdBehyEL37z5UsGL4/s320/ami_01.jpg" width="294" /></a></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Second place was also very detailed. Embroidering a pretty face is a real skill and I really like the hair.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFa1EamoakCtuuTLJ5GXRdN7Gq1TuhhVebogS3C2zUiB1S2uL_ZFJ5ikG-cEmXcQNdZkoQVF68joaoHTa5rc5B5lZ3PPEbrNretZFLsVA5eaZ0EkQI_gOi-kg4kQ2NwmQTB5kwtt40peA/s1600/ami_02.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFa1EamoakCtuuTLJ5GXRdN7Gq1TuhhVebogS3C2zUiB1S2uL_ZFJ5ikG-cEmXcQNdZkoQVF68joaoHTa5rc5B5lZ3PPEbrNretZFLsVA5eaZ0EkQI_gOi-kg4kQ2NwmQTB5kwtt40peA/s320/ami_02.jpg" width="228" /></a></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">But Third place made me wonder. </span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkDUvBc-jCDYG47ObIvWdpAjFAyEqyt3_vazqRKyeP19_TswvwtKQrn9IGFJ2t0HZb4jX-1NsLQLkRlypCrQh9EM0CIZHG3Z_fW6EtjYM7SG_-iRZMXuy2LOW-sQDI4gLVjVzv0blDhFM/s1600/ami_03.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="262" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkDUvBc-jCDYG47ObIvWdpAjFAyEqyt3_vazqRKyeP19_TswvwtKQrn9IGFJ2t0HZb4jX-1NsLQLkRlypCrQh9EM0CIZHG3Z_fW6EtjYM7SG_-iRZMXuy2LOW-sQDI4gLVjVzv0blDhFM/s320/ami_03.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I'm not sure about all the different thread weights. The cockatoo is made of much finer yarn than the other critters. For my money, if you're going to make a set, make them all from the same sized yarn. </span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">At least this one didn't win. </span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2SL2d9PkjZKugGcYwO1qqPW2j7oaRR0nCw4IdVlrmlra_4_jQMMKGGTXIA20Ovnfdp-2fHfTsYleGgsPaCDisX8fSBFXPXxuWN8NNV5R3j_UuH3_8pme92O3jHCpPMLTRnvZg8Ebv9gA/s1600/ami_05.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="308" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2SL2d9PkjZKugGcYwO1qqPW2j7oaRR0nCw4IdVlrmlra_4_jQMMKGGTXIA20Ovnfdp-2fHfTsYleGgsPaCDisX8fSBFXPXxuWN8NNV5R3j_UuH3_8pme92O3jHCpPMLTRnvZg8Ebv9gA/s320/ami_05.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">That is either a giant clownfish or a tiny seal. Extra points though for crocheting the ground.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><b>Amigurumi are bigger than I thought</b></span></li>
</ul>
</div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">My understanding of amigurumi was that they were small and cute (under 10 cm). Whilst the winners were cute they weren't small, about 20 - 25 cm in height. </span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">For reference here is my Sherlock and Watson sitting with the other amigurumi sized amigurumi. </span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjQzGx6Bc6rb2l4Si0q1cK9sRGijQ8TYZYLkY-vmBoMjBC4ru8ba-sjtLGl8vFDt8DrYdRqvvhJtTjqyLnIeW978wlSAuFinEmyX1d8VxI6LPRAakgM1baE5cm9DU03PSasP0poTzouZo/s1600/ami_04.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjQzGx6Bc6rb2l4Si0q1cK9sRGijQ8TYZYLkY-vmBoMjBC4ru8ba-sjtLGl8vFDt8DrYdRqvvhJtTjqyLnIeW978wlSAuFinEmyX1d8VxI6LPRAakgM1baE5cm9DU03PSasP0poTzouZo/s320/ami_04.jpg" width="239" /></a></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Much cuter. Check out that tiny violin.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><b>Colour choice matters</b></span></li>
</ul>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">In hindsight making my doily in sunshine yellow probably wasn't a good move. I think it was a bit too much for the judges. Instead the judges went with much more traditional colours.</span></div>
</div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">First place</span></div>

His topic: Has anyone handmade a gift this year, and has anyone received a dodgy handmade gift? This topic pissed me off. It implied that handmade gifts are inferior and nobody likes getting them.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
As a crafter this really annoys me. I agree not all handmade gifts are great, but they are usually made with love. Plus the time taken to think about and make a handmade gift is usually much longer than it takes to go shopping for a gift. Even if you are shopping during the busy Christmas season. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I guess the real challenge is matching the gift to the recipient. The key is knowing what they like.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>Do they have a favourite band?</b><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNWMFC6KVrlndBCkzqT5vC8hxezXxHFRJO51otTPWvEWpEHoqTNQ3268RBLp7y-SZF0OFbEklMgLwYnswsKAylZ5EME4r_a2rPDF4B8nyVHtmuWlIhTuU7OeqgY1kJIodwsp_bGXE_eNk/s1600/photo-1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="228" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNWMFC6KVrlndBCkzqT5vC8hxezXxHFRJO51otTPWvEWpEHoqTNQ3268RBLp7y-SZF0OFbEklMgLwYnswsKAylZ5EME4r_a2rPDF4B8nyVHtmuWlIhTuU7OeqgY1kJIodwsp_bGXE_eNk/s320/photo-1.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
My Brother-in-Law really likes Regurgitator, so I made him the band for Christmas. (Some of you might remember the Month they spent living in a dome at Federation Square) This is what I imagine they looked like.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>Do they have a beloved pet?</b><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilGzRVfgW2I5jKQOYtmuugj9Sj87jSRv3wE-K7Hdi2-ZGJIJVqaXC9ZLigco-S0OV5-bKAIO_NduJj7Gc1i23UJSgR3ZSafojukhW-BHWqPWCFKwe62N3sWnfhZhjzEuVu1bKVqsPxqEk/s1600/cat_front.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilGzRVfgW2I5jKQOYtmuugj9Sj87jSRv3wE-K7Hdi2-ZGJIJVqaXC9ZLigco-S0OV5-bKAIO_NduJj7Gc1i23UJSgR3ZSafojukhW-BHWqPWCFKwe62N3sWnfhZhjzEuVu1bKVqsPxqEk/s1600/cat_front.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
My friend was moving overseas and had to leave her beloved cat behind. So I made her a cat she could take in her pocket.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>Do they have a favourite movie?</b><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfZE4JtupCZ9J2ubGG0doIDO6QhFoYj36ovhfSPRMSPMWhgPyGuUF4wsNiNzfYKBbLizCyT1keIFZalgXMco7yxGLoZZxi7XyyxDmUnlHleRsY865Vr_gupCGIXV1OVA6Qv46c-8gc0es/s1600/IMG_0008.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfZE4JtupCZ9J2ubGG0doIDO6QhFoYj36ovhfSPRMSPMWhgPyGuUF4wsNiNzfYKBbLizCyT1keIFZalgXMco7yxGLoZZxi7XyyxDmUnlHleRsY865Vr_gupCGIXV1OVA6Qv46c-8gc0es/s320/IMG_0008.jpg" width="245" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
My work colleague really likes Star Wars in general and Lando Calrissian in particular. When his birthday came around, there was only one thing I could make.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>Do they have a favourite comic book character?</b><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOhw0hKl8MUeQNM3eEstdI3YYzn7oK1q3-4JnYNNTndFQtsfO0Q79OPFSOFYNTejJ8AOI_E7g8aU1W25MkuvByvb2WISGY9-ynB8XhVUny056Kwt3nBBWz0FlxFJbx8NeE9BtmA8ej2HU/s1600/IMG_0342.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOhw0hKl8MUeQNM3eEstdI3YYzn7oK1q3-4JnYNNTndFQtsfO0Q79OPFSOFYNTejJ8AOI_E7g8aU1W25MkuvByvb2WISGY9-ynB8XhVUny056Kwt3nBBWz0FlxFJbx8NeE9BtmA8ej2HU/s320/IMG_0342.jpg" width="255" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Another work colleague enjoys cos-play. Her favourite character to dress as is Wonder Woman. A little crochet Wonder Woman was just what she wanted.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>Do they like chickens?</b><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Mum has always liked chickens. Her family had some in the garden when she was growing up. When Mum and Dad moved to a new house I made this tea-cosy as a housewarming gift. </div>
</div>
<div>
<br />
<b>Do they secretly want to be Batman?</b></div>
<div>
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiH041rGC6e1gxbi04nGNMGQQ0JLSpf0Fv7FERtuZxBmwk3s_Rx5dO33GdMj_Qa9Ru6-J2J6opbfK6_gKAk6ksUYBik7dR1rvMN73h_jRncU19TCwXQTKRyFKgAwc30uTOYjcdiy4oIwy8/s1600/Batman-2-small.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiH041rGC6e1gxbi04nGNMGQQ0JLSpf0Fv7FERtuZxBmwk3s_Rx5dO33GdMj_Qa9Ru6-J2J6opbfK6_gKAk6ksUYBik7dR1rvMN73h_jRncU19TCwXQTKRyFKgAwc30uTOYjcdiy4oIwy8/s1600/Batman-2-small.jpg" width="176" /></a> <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9wW4CTN59KZU1nkDoMwbhPg49UJEj0iu-RLlEXg9yJqe_Nk6abg_4as8muE1h9yBmFyiJEa_mUju5DTKHxPLUVU5ljrOybHir5KKOKO4BkZpGdSU-A9LQ2n9bOCzaun1H4QNZDLqGLp8/s1600/Batman-4_small.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9wW4CTN59KZU1nkDoMwbhPg49UJEj0iu-RLlEXg9yJqe_Nk6abg_4as8muE1h9yBmFyiJEa_mUju5DTKHxPLUVU5ljrOybHir5KKOKO4BkZpGdSU-A9LQ2n9bOCzaun1H4QNZDLqGLp8/s1600/Batman-4_small.jpg" width="212" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
One of my colleagues was leaving for a new job. I knew he was a massive fan of Batman, so I made one for his toy collection. As an extra surprise I made the cowl removable, and matched the hair colour to my friends hair. <br />
<br />
This isn't to say that every handmade gift I've made is a winner. I'm pretty sure there are some cross-stitch embroideries I've done that are hidden in spare rooms. However if you put some thought into it, the time and effort of hand making a gift is often appreciated. </div>

It is my fiendish plan to stop the production of pastel baby blankets, boring lacy table cloths and freeform crochet bags of dubious quality. To this end I have entered such things as a <a href="http://evilcrochetgenius.blogspot.com.au/2010/10/more-distractions-show-time.html">crochet dalek </a>and a <a href="http://evilcrochetgenius.blogspot.com.au/2011/09/showing-off.html">dinosaur,</a> hoping that someone will see them and realise that crochet isn't just about lace and grannie squares. This may be happening in the crowd, but so far the judges have remained unimpressed, (I can't believe the dalek was beaten by a tablecloth.)
<p>
That is until this year. Mwahahaha! I entered my Lace Invaders Handkerchief edging into the Own Design category. By using the traditional technique of filet crochet to create pixel art space invaders, I was able to convince the judges that this was just an ordinary hankie. It was awarded first place! Take that freeform crochet bag.
<p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhODbSuZ3jN8NJ7Ag1QJKDDJydt8krbBWeS_JalkRcbjkZeAaeb2taP4ENEBXSM41Ev6JoOK02HPHMxIYeUhspSRM_2_BAJ39ZY0WDz-cIYoA3U2zXbXIujCtFHfhSNEPVtyT7v3FKdDl0/s1600/lace_invaders_winner_01.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="355" width="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhODbSuZ3jN8NJ7Ag1QJKDDJydt8krbBWeS_JalkRcbjkZeAaeb2taP4ENEBXSM41Ev6JoOK02HPHMxIYeUhspSRM_2_BAJ39ZY0WDz-cIYoA3U2zXbXIujCtFHfhSNEPVtyT7v3FKdDl0/s400/lace_invaders_winner_01.JPG" /></a></div>
<p>
However there was a slight hitch in my plan. Although the hankie did win it's category it was beaten to the overall crochet prize by a doiley. Fortunately the doiley was made by yours truly, the Evil Crochet Genius. Another part of my plan for Crochet World Domination is to subvert the traditional art of doiley making. Instead of submitting another white lacy confection, I use colour in this case blue. (Okay so it's still a lacy confection, but at least it doesn't have ruffles.)
<p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhrqoxP-VhWY6BWgEnDK6h1O4J_kW41usqTnrIzebmnFdAOw6FE1YuRI9kzbRItr9r7Bb8eoomfxuiy4CjjwXuQBIEtp-qQASIXtvCp26U8jDmB2-CHxsP0xwXMTYrU9h82vZ72tmQMO3c/s1600/doiley.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="299" width="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhrqoxP-VhWY6BWgEnDK6h1O4J_kW41usqTnrIzebmnFdAOw6FE1YuRI9kzbRItr9r7Bb8eoomfxuiy4CjjwXuQBIEtp-qQASIXtvCp26U8jDmB2-CHxsP0xwXMTYrU9h82vZ72tmQMO3c/s400/doiley.JPG" /></a></div>
<p>
So my dastardly plan has quite a way to go. There are still more lacy old fashioned fripperies that interesting crochet pieces at the show. But I think there is a change coming. For one, there was a tractor covered in crochet in the centre of the Craft Pavilion. Yarn bombing at it's best.
<p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhL1t1Gs2qn2v2WiXATPb_hGxNfl_Ba6J4yryDxOg4BnY4iJ9-wGFErhyphenhyphenKz45_3N7aGyIw8kznt_waruilCANBc5Rj16W4NTO6PYkJ2FHYFURj4lxvg2VyZFx4sK_pG65e7SXmF6madsWs/s1600/IMG_7953.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="337" width="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhL1t1Gs2qn2v2WiXATPb_hGxNfl_Ba6J4yryDxOg4BnY4iJ9-wGFErhyphenhyphenKz45_3N7aGyIw8kznt_waruilCANBc5Rj16W4NTO6PYkJ2FHYFURj4lxvg2VyZFx4sK_pG65e7SXmF6madsWs/s400/IMG_7953.JPG" /></a></div>
<p>
And have a look at second and third placed doileys. (Not too closely because my camera is having trouble focussing.)

They may be old fashioned, but they are in colour. My dastardly plan is beginning to take effect Mwahahahaha!

Totally out of the blue, one minute I was working on an character design, the next I was called into the meeting room and told, "Don't come in Monday." It sucked.
<p>
I wasn't the only one fired that day. In all ten animators and designers lost their jobs. The lucky ones got told that day, the unlucky were still on holidays and didn't get told (via e-mail) until the day before they were due back at work.
<p>
To get through this I did the only thing I knew how to do. I crocheted. I made amigurumi for all the animators who got retrenched with me.
<p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjis5VEfy00uTJhQA3TXpGsV3vVsKvsi5PjhfgLySqzqU74_2WDVhJmZKgyyNXk3BghZ1pUfhXKG5lLHoG831UGWxyKKBaJ-UBO-k-3WtkXJKWw0DkfO7NduBmhp0QY8UgrNy9bFdm6VXo/s1600/IMG_6558.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="240" width="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjis5VEfy00uTJhQA3TXpGsV3vVsKvsi5PjhfgLySqzqU74_2WDVhJmZKgyyNXk3BghZ1pUfhXKG5lLHoG831UGWxyKKBaJ-UBO-k-3WtkXJKWw0DkfO7NduBmhp0QY8UgrNy9bFdm6VXo/s320/IMG_6558.JPG" /></a></div>
<p>
It turned out that the company was in massive financial difficulty and being retrenched was one of the luckiest things to have ever happened to me. Everyone who stayed ended up being stood down without pay about three months later.
<p>
By now the truth was starting to come out. Basically the company had not been paying any outside contractors, who were understandably angry and threatening to call in their debts. The program we had all worked on was critically panned and no overseas network wanted to touch it.
<p>
People were angry and venting their rage on Blog pages and Facebook. You won't find many of these left online, as threatening legal letters followed shortly after any comments were posted. When I found out my Superannuation hadn't been paid I decided to get my revenge. Quietly so as not to get sued.
<p>
This is what I made.

Disclaimer: This amigurumi bears absolutely no resemblance to anybody living, dead or animated. The fact that it looks a shady character in the animation industry is completely coincidental.

(This may have been the point where I became the <b><i>Evil</i></b> Crochet Genius.)
<p>
To cut a long story short our former employer was reported to the Australian Tax Office and they eventually re-united me and my colleagues with our missing money. The company is liquidation and our former boss is being pursued for 9 million dollars. Most of my colleagues have found work either in animation or unrelated fields. Occasionally we all catch up and reminisce about the good old days, when we all worked together as a team. And then we all stick pins into the doll.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2258738402180864896.post-53828714486102353762012-06-24T17:11:00.000+10:002012-06-24T17:11:17.693+10:00A Whole Lot of HankiesOne of my favorite things to crochet is hankie edges. They don't take very long and I get to try out some of the many hundreds of edge patterns I've collected over the years. Best of all the finished product makes a really good gift.
<p>
These are some of the edgings I've done over the years:
<p>
<b>Alice Brooks Design 7283</b>
<p>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxLSx3RP8NU8FJtZeshCIg9Q44_xr9bOm7sia8M3KTmYpMOY7Nl4Xny5_ELOZi5xzFg3dnkxIfD3g2eP5IByabJtRb7eSxRxqt2_WZkl0WIjjRG5eo48CUyg4Jy4WSqmI1X8WOY217FQ4/s1600/Alice_brooks.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="80" width="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxLSx3RP8NU8FJtZeshCIg9Q44_xr9bOm7sia8M3KTmYpMOY7Nl4Xny5_ELOZi5xzFg3dnkxIfD3g2eP5IByabJtRb7eSxRxqt2_WZkl0WIjjRG5eo48CUyg4Jy4WSqmI1X8WOY217FQ4/s400/Alice_brooks.jpg" /></a>
<p>
You'll have to excuse the names. Sometimes if there are only a few edgings the each have a descriptive name, but mostly they just come with a number. Still the design is nice. I like the way it makes four pointed stars. Plus it is really quick to make.

This edging looks good, but it is really annoying to make. You have to get exactly the right number of loops to get the pattern to turn out right. (An odd number on each side for those of you stubborn enough to try.) This particular hankie took 2 years to make. Every time I messed it up it went back into the work basket for about 6 months.

Another common name for a hankie edging. This one is also good to make. I've made it a few times as is, and adapted it once for <a href="http://evilcrochetgenius.blogspot.com.au/2011/09/my-brothers-wedding.html">my brother's wedding.</a>

This edging I copied from the internet, and I'm not sure which site I got it from. That's what happens when you're sneaking a look at the internet during work time. I think I've lost the pattern too. Which is a pity because I really like the way this one turned out.

All these shamrocks take a while to work. But then once their done, that's it the hankie is finished. I'm hoping that this hankie will be lucky for someone.

That's right - Space Invaders now comes in hankie form.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2258738402180864896.post-23309040655025303542012-06-17T16:54:00.005+10:002012-06-17T16:59:40.724+10:00More KnittingAlthough crochet is my first love, sometimes (usually right around Autumn) I just have to knit.
Fortunatly my best friend had her son in June. This means that every year his Birthday comes around just as the weather gets really cold. Which also means that just as I feel the urge to knit, I have to start planning a Birthday present. How lucky is that?
This year the little lad is turning two and I though a hoodie would be something he would appreciate.
<p>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVnP8uZSafA4YLs9bdiXpdS2fzvBB_mS3CZU19Tui9PBLcvRXA9gfDoctfpV3mgZrpwlUY6fDQH03btE2YZuqXsZvrCTTUTUKocm_p11faLbQfOdpuEcv3DByZ_y5pE3SNkIEPue0DLSg/s1600/front.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="240" width="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVnP8uZSafA4YLs9bdiXpdS2fzvBB_mS3CZU19Tui9PBLcvRXA9gfDoctfpV3mgZrpwlUY6fDQH03btE2YZuqXsZvrCTTUTUKocm_p11faLbQfOdpuEcv3DByZ_y5pE3SNkIEPue0DLSg/s320/front.jpg" /></a>
<p>
Not just any hoodie would do. The little guy loves dinosaurs, (and so do I), so I though a dinosaur hoodie would be perfect. After I knitted the jacket and hood, all I needed to do is add a row of crochet spines along the top of the hood and down the back.
<p>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEil8Z7xlx-_HnjY0ak4OswZ779yjM825EgwQu_ORD4H1QS8V4hwk2eUOcE8QbfbNe643csmQgbpas1t-9Y_mSWk0qpZgqC64uLeY8sSoUCdw8vvAlo1N7TubiZtu431zD_2d_ZFYwNOut8/s1600/back.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="240" width="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEil8Z7xlx-_HnjY0ak4OswZ779yjM825EgwQu_ORD4H1QS8V4hwk2eUOcE8QbfbNe643csmQgbpas1t-9Y_mSWk0qpZgqC64uLeY8sSoUCdw8vvAlo1N7TubiZtu431zD_2d_ZFYwNOut8/s320/back.jpg" /></a>
<p>
The pattern for the hoodie is <a href="http://www.knitty.com/ISSUEsummer03/PATTchildHood.html">"Child Hood"</a> from <a href="http://www.knitty.com">Knitty.com</a>. Then I added crochet spines from a Crochet World Pattern.

My favorite part of the pattern is the stripy edge detail. It was a bit tricky to work as I had to knit it separately, but the instructions were pretty clear and it all turned out well in the end.

I gave the hoodie to the Birthday boy today and he loved it. He put it on as soon as he'd ripped open the wrapping paper - instant dinosaur. I only wish I got a better photo. It was a bit warm inside so he didn't wear it for long. Still I think he will have many hours of fun wearing it.

It seems to be quite popular at the moment. I was curious and got on line to find out what all the fuss was about. Turns out it's a really popular meme and there are hundreds of different parodies. Then I found this version:

I thought this was amusing, but something wasn't quite right. Why wasn't it actually knitted? The only thing to be done was get out the sticks.

I'm not great at knitting in two colours, but I think it turned out okay. Here's a close up just to prove it's actually knitted and not just done with photoshop.

I might make some changes to the pattern before knitting this again. I think a cushion covered in this would go great in my front room.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2258738402180864896.post-20491744010437722972012-05-10T15:15:00.000+10:002012-05-10T15:15:04.267+10:00Zeke and AliceA couple of years a go I worked on an animated TV series called Dogstar. It is a futuristic tale of space, plucky kids, ruthless bad-guys and a lost ship full of dogs. I still can't believe how lucky I was to get a job animating a science fiction cartoon. It actually had spaceships in it, and robots! Two of my favorite things. Once I even got to animate one of the characters knitting.
<P>
I wish I could show you some of the stuff I did, but alas, the second series has not been shown on TV yet. So all the footage is under wraps until Channel 9 finds a gap in their schedule. You can check out Series 1 (I think it's on DVD), I didn't work on that one though.
What I can show you is my crochet versions of the characters. Here are Zeke and Alice the robot pilots of the missing Dogstar.

One of my favorite characters to work with was Zeke. He is convinced he is a human, not a robot, which means he gets to do a heap of fun stuff. I made this doll to take along to the Christmas Party. We were supposed to dress up as our favorite character, but I don't really like dressing up.

Alice is the other pilot of the Dogstar. She is much more sensible and constantly tries to keep Zeke in line. I have to say working with Alice was a lot of fun too.

This year I entered two classes/categories: Doiley in Cotten or Linen Thread and Original Design.<br /><br />For the Original Design I entered my <a href="http://evilcrochetgenius.blogspot.com/2011/03/crochet-from-my-warped-imagination.html">Dino Bug.</a> For the Doiley I tried something different - colour.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi02qicNuU1XPikgp1TltapoZJAFeW7RuaefzBdomV14hPsgx0e0cDPywkXCDvpuJ6VU6et25JfJz_xfiyRuvj6BdjMpzHOabck3pIhJ6hnEgDulkhxw5C-hIXvXlsXt8n3-TqWIkS-LOA/s1600/Lily_doiley_web.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 378px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi02qicNuU1XPikgp1TltapoZJAFeW7RuaefzBdomV14hPsgx0e0cDPywkXCDvpuJ6VU6et25JfJz_xfiyRuvj6BdjMpzHOabck3pIhJ6hnEgDulkhxw5C-hIXvXlsXt8n3-TqWIkS-LOA/s400/Lily_doiley_web.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5655841907444206178" /></a><br /><br />The pattern is the Water Lily Doiley from the Paragon Crochet Book number 122. I chose it because it had the little 3D flowers on it. They do make it completely useless as a doiley, but they do look lovely. The thread is Guttermans 100% cotton and I used my favorite 0.5mm crochet hook.<br /><br />Here's a close up of the flowers, just so you can appreciate how much work went into them. Each petal is joined and crocheted separately, which means I had to sew in over 80 ends. Just for the record, I will not be making another one of these.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVRv8SUDMjTcptFADISmmL5D03_st8YtAump1Ez8YIDfs2yy46zOS2VAqFwdT6A-Fe5CkpuB1zoqzruOd12QredPvyItlWzSkWjF4SQ05_9dEwXq2KCsDbBaP7v3W2rIarFrhGY4HsTUo/s1600/close_up_web.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVRv8SUDMjTcptFADISmmL5D03_st8YtAump1Ez8YIDfs2yy46zOS2VAqFwdT6A-Fe5CkpuB1zoqzruOd12QredPvyItlWzSkWjF4SQ05_9dEwXq2KCsDbBaP7v3W2rIarFrhGY4HsTUo/s320/close_up_web.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5655845672987820530" /></a><br /><br />I thought the flowers were looking a little messy, so I tried sugar starching. I went wrong somewhere and the whole piece ended up covered in white powder. It did starch nicely though, I could have used it as a frisbee. <br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyKcHwQqIByqubN2_7wRW45_jaq9oQ3SJxZjzlTXRKf8FL58uGtGZwQVyhInmGmRxDXH6zyMOhs6LAWog7jSWPkpaIfXH9YAO2n_zJS4uU8MEFEFXgHhqnAcyqBgHXTptzT_pA5HS_Bh4/s1600/sugar_Starch.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 211px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyKcHwQqIByqubN2_7wRW45_jaq9oQ3SJxZjzlTXRKf8FL58uGtGZwQVyhInmGmRxDXH6zyMOhs6LAWog7jSWPkpaIfXH9YAO2n_zJS4uU8MEFEFXgHhqnAcyqBgHXTptzT_pA5HS_Bh4/s320/sugar_Starch.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5655844816063918306" /></a> <br /><br /><br />Fortunately sugar washes out fairly easily, and a little spray starch was all that I needed in the end. Even better the judges at the Show must have liked it. It won First Prize! Now I just have to go in and see what beat the Dino Bug.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2258738402180864896.post-85922706228298987482011-09-03T14:12:00.012+10:002011-09-07T16:58:32.073+10:00My Brother's WeddingMy little brother's wedding was last night. It was a nice relaxed event, with only a few close family and friends. Even so there were plenty of things to get organised. Between finding an outfit and folding 120 paper cranes, there hasn't been much time for crochet. However I did have time for a few small projects.<br /><br />First of all I needed a Hens gift for the Bride. I thought a lacy hanky with a custom edge would fit the bill. If you look closely you can see the bride and grooms initials. The "A" for the bride is fairly obvious, but there are also little T's around the edge too.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfykk9S7DWbOGxmpzF03gxEe320Ru0xL_R2Opw2iQMJbVITJB2AqXHfGV6LqK2ETMW5xfZCGUkFyk0wIDoMAVve6tgf72psHa0TzCVNCRus-sstHhpdOPjYMM7v-MuQ4TaMLbjUmYKfQ0/s1600/2011_Angie_web.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 125px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfykk9S7DWbOGxmpzF03gxEe320Ru0xL_R2Opw2iQMJbVITJB2AqXHfGV6LqK2ETMW5xfZCGUkFyk0wIDoMAVve6tgf72psHa0TzCVNCRus-sstHhpdOPjYMM7v-MuQ4TaMLbjUmYKfQ0/s400/2011_Angie_web.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5647986554397021506" /></a><br />The Bride was far to happy to need a hankie on the day, I don't think she stopped smiling once. However the Mother-of-the-Bride did get a little teary, so it's a good thing I made a hankie for her too.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVp-u-4V2Z7FQPUyZbv-ZNZCq5yEWv1Yl4WHZVYWMP2kc2KJVeLaCgKUxBdYdD5Pa9Aj64CG_E31eFm3owkuGFZ01g0NADXGCEb3wLXJz4anfL5f0yNUHdfWDg3KUtfyZyV_E20YU2AXs/s1600/2011_Veronica_web.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 392px; height: 131px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVp-u-4V2Z7FQPUyZbv-ZNZCq5yEWv1Yl4WHZVYWMP2kc2KJVeLaCgKUxBdYdD5Pa9Aj64CG_E31eFm3owkuGFZ01g0NADXGCEb3wLXJz4anfL5f0yNUHdfWDg3KUtfyZyV_E20YU2AXs/s400/2011_Veronica_web.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5647987409573541346" /></a><br /><br />And what wedding would be complete without a Bride and Groom for the top of the cake.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVFEloKepAxt4A3ughGU4FF-XxDKljPuhwkH909DT-Jt18RLhOZwc8ihQblgo9MuwRiwtjhap-jD3wGY9r_UoqKz95GjMyI9XrHx81aUX6aEIDWpQig6c0_mB51_BcP3kSJrKr2OPEEs4/s1600/IMG_0221.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 174px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVFEloKepAxt4A3ughGU4FF-XxDKljPuhwkH909DT-Jt18RLhOZwc8ihQblgo9MuwRiwtjhap-jD3wGY9r_UoqKz95GjMyI9XrHx81aUX6aEIDWpQig6c0_mB51_BcP3kSJrKr2OPEEs4/s320/IMG_0221.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5649506248559889682" /></a><br /><br />Or in this case the side of the cake.
